Cause 4 Life team in ChinaFor twelve days, our Cause 4 Life team in China served at the Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village, where more than sixty children thrive in a loving atmosphere. Our interns assisted the staff with a field day, assessments for children with disabilities, and simple acts of service. But what marked this group of girls who had never previously met was their unity, especially the team’s support for their fellow intern Elizabeth. Despite her wheelchair, Elizabeth was determined to climb the Great Wall of China. She hadn’t walked since she was a teenager, but she took a step of faith, and the entire team and children’s home staff pitched in to help. One young man pushed Elizabeth’s chair up hills so steep, he needed to go barefoot. Then the team was challenged by cable cars which only slowed down and never fully stopped, and they worked together to get her wheelchair on and off. The last obstacle was a flight of high, uneven stairs, which Elizabeth climbed one step at a time, leaning on the other girls’ shoulders. When Elizabeth finally reached the top of the wall, the staring crowd burst into cheers. Such a unified group is Cause 4 Life’s goal for every team. And now that their great adventure has ended, these girls are exploring ways to continue what they began in China. Some wish to return to the Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village to help begin a new vocational center for older orphans, but thanks to Elizabeth, all seven have a new awareness of disability wherever they go.
