Joe and Brandon at Family Retreat Every summer all across the country, people of all ages pour into Family Retreats —all with one thing in common: a great big heart full of love to give away. They’re called Short Term Missionaries—STM’s—and their job is simple: to serve a family with disability in the love and strength of Jesus that brings transformation to everybody involved—including themselves! Joe is a fireman, a strapping young man with absolutely no disability experience. He arrived at Family Retreat ready to serve—but a little nervous, too. After a day of training, Joe was paired with Brandon, who has Angelman’s Syndome and is non-verbal. Flexibility, patience, love, and yet more flexibility followed for five days as Brandon and Joe learned to communicate and love each other. Up and down hills they roamed, often Joe carrying Brandon on his back piggyback style. At the end of Family Retreat, Joe’s words are echoed around the country by STM’s just like him: “The biggest thing I got from working with Brandon is a full heart,” he said. “I leave here with joy… Yep, it’s like I’m bursting with joy here at Family Retreat… I don’t want to leave.”

You can meet Joe and Brandon in this Joni and Friends TV episode, then check out the 2013 Schedule of Family Retreats to see where you can volunteer and have your own bursting-with-joy summer experience! Sign-ups start in January!

Dear Joni, I admire those STM's! There is no joy greater than the joy in serving the Lord Jesus. And the blessing of God our Father is upon those who are eager to please Him.
